If you told the Ubuntu installer to delete all partitions on the hard disk, it did so and you can't recover it. But there's a change you did something else and it only did overwrite the boot sector and left the partition intact. In that case, you might be able to use GPARTED (no doubt as a Linux user you know how to use that, I think it's installed in Ubuntu, it is in Mint anyway) to set that partition to bootable and/or maybe set GRUB to boot from it (you certainly you know all about Grub also).
